I have a problem with my T1400H slowing down when going forward uphill or making sharp turns. I haven't checked it in reverse yet. I drained the transaxle oil (looked black with fine, metallic filings in it) & replenished with UDT. The hydro level is full. Could a slipping belt cause this? If not, how should I proceed to correct this?

TIA,
Marty

That is the first place we look not that you did any harm to change the fluid. You might also want to check the pivot on the belt tensioner to be sure that it is free and moves easily to keep tension on it. You have a few years on that system and you would do well to look at that area as that is the first thing we look at when we look for problems in the drive and is the most common. ....

Art,

I changed the hydro fluid today & cleaned the filter but nothing changed. A question - should the differential have 20W-30 oil in it instead of UDT hydro fluid? I put in the UDT as I thought the whole system used it, but I now think there should be regular oil in the differential. I DID put UDT in the hydro resivoir tank.

I checked the idler - you pegged it dead on. The plastic pulley is extremely worn out AND the tensioner pivot shaft is frozen! I freed up the tensioner, polished, cleaned & oiled it well. Now I have to obtain a new pulley & I hope this will get it 100%.

Any comments you can provide on the differential oil would be greatly appreciated, and much thanks for your dead on diagnosis!
Marty ....
